Australia 2003

Professor Schalow's Research

Australia 2003-2004

During the 2003-2004 academic year I was engaged in research on Australian English. I visited five cities in Australia - Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane. In each city I was able to record Australian television using the cable television input in the hotel, outputting to a VCR I had purchased upon arrival in Australia. Television programs were recorded onto a VCR tape, and the tapes were transported back to Japan. In total, I accumulated over 40 hours of television programming.

Australia uses a PAL system, which means that the VCR tapes are not able to be viewed with a Japanese NTSC television monitor and VCR. Consequently, in Japan I was engaged in the work of converting all material into a digital format that could be viewed and edited on the computer. This conversion required a great deal of time, and finally yielded the commercials and vocabulary that you can see on the left.

Television in Australia

During my visit to Australia I first experienced the new technology known as direct digital satellite broadcasting.
